Ecuador have won 2:0 over Poland in their opening Group A match, the second match of Group A in Gelsenkirchen.
Goals from Carlos Tenorio and Agustin Delgado gave the South Americanís a shocking, but deserved win over Poland.
Both teams started the game warily, with good chances being missed by both sides, with battling play in midfield, but the final pass failing for both sides.
Poland started the match well, but Ecuador, now commanding the run of play, took the lead after 23 minutes with a header-on from Agustin Delgado for Carlos Tenorio to head-in from close-range to silence the Polish fans in the stadium.
The goal seemed to galvanize Ecuador, and the South Americanís almost doubled the lead in the 28th when Tonorio broke free to give the ball to Agustin Delgado, who lifted his shot over the bar from close-range.
Polandís Radoslaw Sobolewski and Ebi Smolarek both had chances to take advantage of some slack defending from the Ecuadorianís but both players failed to find their passing feet, and Ecuador keeper Mora was never troubled.
Aston Villa defender Ulises de la Cruz beat his marker in the penalty area, with his scuffed shot being toed away for a wasted corner by Mariusz Jop.
Both goalkeepers had routine saves to make in the final minutes of the first-half, but Ecuador held on to take the game to half-time 1-0.
Poland started the second-half the stronger team, but the South Americanís defended with vigour, and denied the Poles any clear shot at goal.
Carlos Tenorio was substituted early in the second-half for Ivan Kaviedes, and the change made all the difference.
Delgado, Ecuadorís all time leading goalscorer doubled the lead after Kavides broke the Poland off-side trap, and passed the ball to Delgado for an easy tap-in to make it 2-0 in the 81st minute.
Substitute Ireneusz Jelen seemed to bolster the Poland attack and was unlucky not to halve the deficit in the 84th, when his shot rebounded off the post, but that was all the Poles could muster.
The Ecuador defence gave no space at all for the Poles who, even with a late flurry of corners, failed to capitalise on their height advantage, and the ball was easily put away to safety from the excellent Ecuadorian defenders.
