Tottenham centerback Michael Dawson will join the England training squad Monday to replace Luke Young as a standby for the World Cup.
England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has five players on standby in case any of his World Cup squad of 23 gets injured during the buildup to the June 9-July 9 championship in Germany.
Dawson has played a major part in Tottenham's climb to a fifth-place finish in the Premier League, although he has never played for England other than at under-21 level.
Young, who has made seven appearances for England, aggravated an ankle injury that he picked up late in the season with Charlton.
The other standby players are Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson, West Ham midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker and strikers Jermain Defoe of Tottenham and Andy Johnson of Crystal Palace.
