Trinidad and Tobago have drawn 0:0 with Sweden in their first-ever match in the World Cup Finals.
Trinidad and Tobago were under pressure at the beginning of the match, with Sweden pressing for an opener, but Leo Beenhakker's team defended well, and restricted the shooting possibilities for Sweden Trinidad and Tobago defender Avery John came in with a good clearance after a Sweden attack, cutting out a dangerous Freddie Ljungberg cross. Sweden almost scored the opener in the 30th minute with Thomas Linderoth placing a wonderful pass into the box to Anders Svensson, who broke free, but was closed down by West Ham keeper Shaka Hislop. Hislop also saved well from shots from Christian Wilhelmson and Zlatan Ibrahimovic as the Swede’s pushed harder. As the half progressed, Trinidad and Tobago began to find their rhythm, and had a few chances of their own, with Stern John shooting high, and Chris Birchall shooting wide. The second-half continued in much the same vein, with Sweden pushing the Trinidad and Tobago back-four, but being shut-out by the well drilled defence, but part of that crucial defence, Avery John was sent-off in the opening minute of the second period for a second yellow card. Beenhakker, rather than choosing to bring on a new defender, went on the attack, taking off Collin Samuel for striker Cornell Glen who, despite the constant pressure from Sweden, managed to get closest to scoring the in second-half with a stunning volley that ricocheted off the post. Seconds later Ibrahimovic forced Hislop into another fine save with a close range volley, but the Hammers keeper parried away well. Sweden kept pushing, but found it impossible to break through the Warriors’ backline, with Shaka Hislop making some excellent close range saves from Marcus Allback and the Swede’s becoming increasingly frustrated. Sweden head coach Lars Lagerback made two changes, with Johnson and Kallstrom coming on for Wilhelmsson and Linderoth. But try as they might,Sweden could find no-way past Trinidad and Tobago, who defended resolutely throughout with their ten-men, and earned a thoroughly deserved draw. |
